What Will You Do on the MLK Day of Service?

Monday, January 7, 2013 - 10:44
Monday, January 21, 2013 is the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday—and also the MLK Day of Service. The Corporation for National & Community Service urges people from all walks of life to spend the day participating in service projects that strengthen communities, bridge barriers and create solutions to social problems.

MLK Jr. Day of Service

How will you impact your world on the MLK Day of Service?

  • Enter your zip code on the MLK Day of Service website to find Day of Service projects close to home.
  • Plan your own project – click here for ideas and toolkits.
  • Host a One Million Bones Challenge event in your community! Your school, a community center or a senior center are ideal locations. You can even register your event on the MLK Day of Service website to let others know and join.
  • Share Your Story and the impact of your work after the MLK Day of Service.

Creating and mailing handmade bones is an excellent way to serve others on this special day of service. You’ll be taking a stand against humanitarian crises and you’ll become one in a million—by ensuring your community is represented in the massive installation of one million bones that will cover the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in June, 2013.

Each bone you make generates $1 for CARE, a leading humanitarian organization—up to $500,000. These funds, provided through Students Rebuild, will support CARE’s work to rebuild lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia.

No matter which project you choose, we hope you’ll participate in this special day of service to help move us all towards Dr. King’s dream of the “beloved community.”
