We love hearing from our Students Rebuild Literacy Challenge teams! Today we hear from two representatives of an au pair organization who are spreading a love for learning and service in their communities. Photos courtesy of Ulli Heregger and Angi Weiser-Smith.

“My name's is Ulrike (Ulli) Heregger and I work for Cultural Care Au Pair. In May, our au pair group in Larchmont, NY participated in the Literacy Challenge. We encouraged our au pairs to make bookmarks during our monthly coffee hour, to make bookmarks at home with their host children and some of the kids made bookmarks in school with their teachers.

We were able to collect a total of 111 bookmarks that we mailed off. We enjoyed this activity and we hope to participate in the future again.”

“Our school is a Montessori school (Brixham Montessori Friends School in York, Maine) with about 80 students from toddler to 5th grade. The way I am affiliated with the school is that I am a teacher assistant in this 3-6 classroom.

While every class participated, our class focused a little more on it and we reached our goal of making 100 bookmarks with 17 children in this 3-6 class.

The children were very enthusiastic about helping children in need and were also eager to reach our goal of 100. We kept a chart in our class where we kept track and after we received all the bookmarks from the other classes the older kids were eager to calculate and find out how much money we can donate.”
